Regulation

Regulation of a piano is the process of making sure that all of the components inside the piano are working together as they should. It is a very important process that helps pianos to perform as well as they can. Due to pianos long life spans, the components of the action can begin to warp and alter their positioning over time, this causes them to go out of regulation. Common signs of a piano in need of regulation are:

  • Sluggish keys - This is when you press a key and it feels like there is a long time before the hammer begins its travel towards the strings.

  • Uneven key height/ spacing - When the keys are uneven in their height or width.

  • Sticky keys - This is when a key sticks down after you depress it, causing it to block the hammer.

  • Rubbing hammers - Sometimes the hammers will go out of alignment over time, causing them to rub against a neighbouring hammer. This will show itself in the feel of the key touch, with added friction causing it to drag.

Regulation can help to eliminate any minor, yet frustrating problems with the feel and touch of your piano. It also will give your piano a new lease of life and a much being playability. It is usually essential for older pianos that may have been left alone for some time and are being put back to use. It is also often needed if the piano has gone through a lot of humidity changes.
